Types of Washing Machines

Deciding between a top- or front-load washer depends on your laundry preferences.

Top-load washers are classic machines featuring a central agitator that rotates clothes throughout each cycle. While the top-load design makes loading your machine easier on your back, the agitation process can cause more wear on your clothes.

Dryer Basics

Dryers come in two options: gas or electric. Choosing one depends on which type of hookup you have. But if you’re thinking about upgrading to electric or gas, here’s what you need to know:

• Electric dryers need a 240-volt, three- or four-pronged outlet and an external vent to dissipate heat. However, if you can’t install a vent, check out ventless condensation dryers like heat pump dryers or compact dryers.
• Gas dryesr are a little heftier. These need a natural gas or liquid propane connection (some models have liquid propane conversion kits), a three-prong, 110-volt outlet, and an external exhaust vent. And if you’re worried about adding to your utility bill, consider pilot-less ignition dryers or dryers with automatic shutoff.

Paired, Stacked, and Compact Laundry Options

Even if you're only replacing one machine, you should consider investing in a washer and dryer set, a stacked laundry unit, or a combo washer and dryer.

A matching laundry pair will have compatible capacities and features, plus a coordinated finish. And you won’t have to worry about under-drying your clothes either!

A stacked laundry unit or laundry center is an excellent option for a compact laundry room. You’ll get the same benefits of matching capacities, features, and looks, but in one appliance!

Washer dryer combos are another solution for a compact space as they combine a washer and dryer into one laundry machine.
